What book is in my bag?

GONE GIRL

WARNING – POTENTIAL SPOILERS

Recently just started reading this….I’m a bit behind on the times I know. What I most enjoyed about the novel was that Nick and Amy aren’t reliable narrators..

You can’t trust what they say. I like that the self deception they indulge in, trying to be the “better image” they portray to the world bleeds into how they tell their story.

Much the same way in real life when you or I retell a story to someone else we always retell it with a “spin” to try and portray ourselves and events in a light of our choice. That manner of story telling is both unsettling and comforting at once. Unsettling because you are unsure as the reader what you can take as fact and comforting because it’s realistic and everyday for people to lie so why shouldn’t characters in a book do it?

What worried me was how much I identified with the less savoury aspects of Amy and Nick. But then I suppose that’s what a good novel does…calls to the parts of a person you don’t always want to think about.

I’m going to try and convince Manfriend to go and see the film version with me tonight.
